The Uchumachi

Coroico is built on one of the flanks of the Uchumachi. The 2700 meter high mountain is inviting for a climb, because of the views, the forest and its orchids. From 2100 meters on, the mountain is natural reservation; hence most of it is forested (especially on the south flank).

A classic hike in Coroico is the walk to the summit. The mountain top is about 15 kilometres long. The forest on the top of the mountain is pretty, and on clear days the views alone are worth the three hour gradual climb.

Big part of the climb is not covered by forest, so you might get burned by the sun. Sometimes clouds come your way, and pass right by you. When the village is in or below the clouds, you might actually climb above them.

At the top of the mountain, there are ritual sites where the Ayamará come to say grace to Pacha Mama or the Uchumachi.

Do not do this walk alone or with just two people.

A good base for walks in the Uchumachi forest is Hotel La Finca, half an hour by minibus on the road to Carmen Pampa. They have a couple of paths, just below the cliff that separates top from flanks. After the walk, go for a swim in their beautiful lagoon.
